Rebati is the very first (1898) short story ever published in Oriya, by the famous writer, Fakir Mohan Senapati; giving a starkly realistic picture of village life. The main character in the story, Rebati, is a little girl who wants to get educated, contrary to the mores of the day, and against vehement opposition from her own grandmother. The story ends tragically, because just as she seems to be on the verge of a new life, her father is stricken by cholera in an epidemic that eventually consumes the entire family and Rebati's teacher. The grandmother puts the blame for inviting this tragedy on Rebati's yearning for education, and the curses heaped on Rebati's head will haunt the reader.

We hope to make the original story and an English translation available here, once some copyright issues are resolved.
