While TEXitself does not understand Unicode, the Omega
project [38] is a proposal to make a Unicode-compliant version of
TEX. The Omega project files are already integrated into many common
distributions of TEX. Try ``man omega'' or look for Omega documentation on
your system, e.g., in /usr/share/texmf/doc/omega/base/omega-manual.pdf. While
I have not personally tried Omega, there is also a package, Oriya-Tex,
available from any CTAN site [39]. It comes with its own Type
1 fonts, and allows one to use Oriya under plain TEXvia a pre-processor. The
Oriya text is entered using a pseudo-phonetic transcription that is converted
into appropriate character codes from the font by the pre-processor. For
example, the input
\orx rebati produces
େରବତି, the name of our project, nicely
typeset.
